Becoming a Successful Philanthropist

With decades of business experience, Jonathan “Jon” Yob is an accomplished entrepreneur in the Tampa-area community. He founded and serves as the president of JAY Management Corporation and the Yob Family Foundation (YFF) and has served on many community boards. Through his foundation, Jonathan Yob engages in a range of philanthropic endeavors. While the foundation places significant emphasis on assisting child welfare organizations, the YFF also supports numerous other causes including nature conservancy, health care access, the plight of the homeless, and helping people suffering from mental illness.

While anyone can be a philanthropist, to do the most good with the resources available, you need to begin the process by creating a clear strategy. This involves figuring out why you want to become a philanthropist in the first place. Think about what is important to you and be honest about the outcomes you hope will come about through your efforts. This may include leaving a legacy behind or giving back to meet a moral duty. You may also find that your passion is derived from something you or a loved one went through.

Regardless, finding out these answers will give you direction. Rather than attempting to choose from hundreds or thousands of charities to support, you can focus on the ones that speak to you and your strategy. This lets you narrow down your options, thus ensuring your gifts have a greater impact on which nonprofit(s) you choose to support. Meanwhile, your desired outcomes will help you decide when to give, and if any conditions should apply to help achieve a specific goal.
